One of the many lessons the pandemic has taught us is that we can turn our skills, hobbies or passion projects into an extra source of income. This can become our backup plan instead of depending on one income stream. Better known as a side Hustle.

There is usually that one constant thought that I know you might be asking or have asked yourself before what small business can one start with small capital probably even with no capital.

Well today we  share a list showing some of them ,feel free to comment  one you think can be added to the list.

1.Drawing and painting

If you are one of those who drawing or painting is taken as a hobby know you can get paid while enjoying what you do in your free time. One can even create a career out of this as a creative artist and with this kind of skill you are not restricted to any industry. Some of the most popular options include pencil art, canvas water paints, and charcoal drawings. If you are looking for inspiration you can visit the art galleries available across Kenya. Through your drawing and you can market using social media among your friends to be used for their house or business. Brighten those dull walls tag us we shall spread the word.

 

2. Freelance Writing

Being a freelance writer all you need is a laptop or computer, a stable internet connection and most important your commitment. The good thing no experience or little of it is required for you to make it as a freelance writer. You can write online articles, business plans, resumes, short stories among many others. You can find freelance writing jobs on upwork and also a Kenyan online writing community.

3. Software Development

Now more than before businesses are embracing software solutions to automate  their manual processes ,getting to explore e- commerce opportunities for their businesses and need to have an online presence . There is a great demand for software developers with skills ranging from web development ,mobile application development, data scientists among others. Having this types of skills one work as a freelancer and you can also get to work remotely getting paid by delivering projects or on task basis. A random LinkedIn search for a software returns multiple of job opportunities for a software developer. All you need is a laptop a stable internet and your skill to get started. You can get to bid for jobs through online platforms such as Kuhustle ,upwork   and fiverr among others.

4. Blogging

Blogging has quickly become one of the most popular ways of communicating and spreading information and news. Blogs can be used for personal use, business, news, and networking. The difference from freelance writing is in blogging you pick a niche write posts in regards to that niche that can be read on a blog can be yours or someone else. If you want to create a blog, you don’t need a revolutionary idea. But, your blog should be focused on something specific. Hubspot defines a blog as a regularly updated website or web page, and can either be used for personal use or to fulfill a business need.

5. Printing and photocopying.

If you reside in Kenya then you must have come across the interesting assignments shared across the social media that the kids undergoing the new education system titled Competency Based Curriculum. This is the new education system in Kenya that replaced the 8-4-4 education system. Personally, I have observed the number of printing materials that are required this is a business that an ideal set up anyone living near learning institutions and offices has a ready . To start you need a laptop or a desktop computer ,small printer cable of printing colored and as well as black and white and  a bale of printing papers.

6. Event and Party Planning

With the easing of covid-19 restrictions and also with the adapting to new events every day, week, month and year your can almost predict Kenyans are partying(#Sherehe). Events and parties ranging from Company and religious, weddings and dowry payments, birthdays, baby showers among others. Planning and holding parties can be a very stressful undertaking and if this is your cup of tea why not get paid for helping out and making it memorable for them. By targeting at least 2 or 3 parties or events in a week this could turn out to be a great income to supplement your main income or even replace it.

7. Photography and cinematography

Turn your photography hobby to be a potential extra earner  if you have  some skills with a camera. The skill can also be learnt. If you are working as a camera man/lady your can transition to doing side gigs pertaining to this since is what you do on an 8-5 job.H ere specializing in a niche can win you many clients from wedding, event , product photography  among many others.

8. Baking

If you do enjoy baking cakes, cupcakes for your family, workmates, friends and they totally enjoy showering you with feedback why not take it up a side hustle. You can ask them for recommendations, take pictures share them on Instagram build a clientele from this. You can begin this at the comfort of your home. Create a Signature cake recipe you can be known for create your brand and enjoy the money as it comes.

9. Private Lesson Teacher

Are you a teacher? How about teaching children after school? With the digital disruption of learning most parents have embraced online learning and this can be a good opportunity to offer your skills . You will have to choose your area of expertise. Many parents are busy and can’t afford to pay home teachers, you can organize a small after school lesson.

10. Employee Training/Career Coach

The demand for specialized employee training is enormous and it is increasing. If your area of expertise involves dealing with company staff and their wellbeing for the betterment of the company then you’re you can consider this opportunity. Especially now with the new working culture as companies grapple with remote working, business market shifts and the right employee skillset. This makes an ideal opportunity as mostly required employee training courses are on customer service, money handling, working place safety measures, stress management etc. Normally these training courses conducted on employer’s site. One can operate this business from home location creating an online course.

11. Selling shoes/clothes

For a start you could start with a few shoes or clothes then be selling online from your home using social media. The competition is there though you will have to figure how to differentiate yourself with others to stand out.
